A Night at Sea

By Roland Teichholz

The crests of the waves roar in the night
In their endless drive to swallow the moon
And the powers of darkness desperately fight
To conquer the world before dawn, soon

The men on deck are tired and weary
The night was long, the sea untamed
The catch is good and the boat heavy
And hardship's anyway part of the game

T'is almost day now and twirling seagulls
Tell us the coast should soon be in sight
The children at home will wake up and giggle
The wife for her man has prayed all night

Good Lord in Heaven all men are like sailors
Whether they ramble on brine or land
Through gale and storm they tack and labor
Yet their fate is all in Your hands
